The UNESCO World Heritage Committee require the Site to be managed in accordance with the requirements of the ‘Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage’ (1972) and the UK Government is obligated to support this objective as a signatory to the UNESCO Convention.

In the UK, ultimate responsibility for World Heritage Site management lies with central government. The land ownership status of World Heritage Sites also differs significantly from Site to Site; our World Heritage Site is a very large ‘serial’ Site, comprising ten separate Areas with thousands of different ownerships. Approximately 80% of the World Heritage Site is in small private ownerships, the remainder is held by organisations such as the Duchy of Cornwall, the National Trust and Cornwall Council. Any questions on specific landscapes should go to the owner of that property.

We, as the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Office, are the co-ordinating management team within Cornwall and west Devon. Whilst we always love to speak to people about our Site, we do not own or directly manage any of the the mining landscapes.
