Celebrating 20 years of World Class Heritage - Events Programme

Join us for an exciting programme of events celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. We will be adding more events throughout the course of the year. Follow us on our socials @cornishmining for the latest updates.

From Granite to Galaxies

Date: 25 May 2026Time: 10.30am – 3.30pm
Venue: Geevor Tin Mine Museum, Pendeen

‘From Granite to Galaxies’ is an immersive 360 degree film journeying from the molten heart of Cornwall to the silent reaches of space, in celebration of 20 years of World Heritage Status - created by Five29 with Moquette Films, part-funded by Cornwall & West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site to mark the 20th anniversary of inscription.

A breathtaking 360 full-dome experience that traces Cornwall’s extraordinary evolution. From the creation of granite to the ingenuity of the Industrial Revolution and the dawning space age, the film follows the minerals that shaped a nation. Witness the transition from ancient stone to a lithium-powered sustainable future, ultimately launching Cornish heritage beyond our atmosphere and into the cosmos.

Part of a trilogy of 360 films commissioned by Screen Cornwall and funded by Cornwall Council, exploring the themes of People, Planet and Place in immersive sound and audio.

Great Trek Book Launch

Join us to celebrate the launch of The Great Trek of the Transport Party, Mexico (1825 – 1826): A Tale of Tragedy and Triumph by Dr Sharron Schwartz — a significant new publication supported by the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site as part of our 20th anniversary celebrations.

This event explores the remarkable story of 1,500 tons of Cornish mining machinery transported to Mexico, marking 200 years since Cornish steam technology transformed silver mining.

Celebrate innovation, endurance and a shared Cornish–Mexican industrial heritage — it’s going to be a great evening!

The Director’s Cut: The Great Trek of the Transport Party

From Horses to World Heritage! The Mineral Railway in High Wood and Moorswater

Date: 14 June 2026Time: 11.30am
Venue: High Wood, Near Liskeard

Join local historian Iain Rowe and discover this less well-known part of Area A9 – Caradon Mining District. This fairly flat but possibly muddy 4-mile walk explores the remains of the Liskeard and Caradon Railway that you can trace in the woods and then heads down to former railway depot at Moorswater. Part of the High Wood Summer Fair programme.

Volunteer Work Party

Date: 19 June 2026Time: 10.00am – 3pm
Venue: Luxulyan Valley

Join Cormac Ranger Chris Bond for some practical volunteering. Himalayan Balsam can out compete other vegetation and undermine riverbanks. The day will be spent pulling Himalayan Balsam to help restore biodiversity in the wetland areas.

Tools will be supplied, please wear old clothes and strong boots.

Hot drinks and biscuits will be available, please bring a packed lunch if you are staying for the day.

20th Anniversary Exhibition

A pop-up exhibition at Kresen Kernow as part of the 20th anniversary of the inscription of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of the mining landscape across the 10 Areas of the World Heritage Site from Area A1 – St Just Mining District to Area A10 – Tamar Valley Mining District with Tavistock with a new suite of images by Crow Creative.

Volunteer Work Party

Date: 16 July 2026Time: 10.00am – 2pm
Venue: Luxulyan Valley

Join Cormac Ranger Chris Bond for some practical volunteering. The morning will be spent checking for any more Himalayan Balsam left over from the work party on 19th June and aftercare of recently planted trees.

Tools will be supplied, please wear old clothes and strong boots.

Echoes of Gonamena 

Date: 18 July 2026Time: 2.30pm and 7.30pm
Venue: Barn Theatre, Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre, Upton Cross

Original cast members from the hit 2009 production of Gonamena are reuniting for a special one-off ‘dramatic reading’ celebrating South East Cornwall’s mining heritage and the 20th anniversary of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage status.

Capturing the true and dramatic story of the Caradon mines’ boom and bust years, Echoes of Gonamena combines a carefully researched script with the talents of community and professional performers. Written by Simon Parker, directed by Olivier Award-winning Kneehigh director Simon Harvey, produced by Sarah Pym, and with a live performance by the Boilerhouse choir.

Butterflies of the Carnon Valley 

Date: 21 July 2026Time: 11am
Venue: Carnon Valley near Bissoe

Join Cornwall Butterfly Conservation for a guided walk through the Carnon Valley, a landscape rich in mining heritage. This area has been regularly explored as part of the organisation’s Mining for Butterflies project.

They hope to see plenty of common butterfly species, and along the way—particularly near the pools—dragonflies and perhaps even the Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly. The walk will include visits to Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Bissoe Valley Nature Reserve and the Arsenic Works, where the Silver-studded Blue butterfly has been recorded.

Butterflies of Wheal Fortune and Cusvey

Date: 25 July 2026Time: 11am
Venue: Twelveheads, near St Day

Another chance to join Cornwall Butterfly Conservation and explore the vital role mining landscapes play in supporting a variety of rare and beautiful butterflies. 

Keep an eye out for Purple Hairstreak, and with a bit of luck you might also spot some late Silver-studded Blues. The area is also home to a population of Grayling. Towards the end of the walk, the areas around the tailings dam are an excellent spot to see dragonflies and damselflies.

Natur! - Federation of Old Cornwall Societies

Date: 25 July 2026Time: 11am - 4pm
Venue: Shire House Suite, Bodmin

Join us at Natur! Part of the Festival of Archaeology 2026, this event organised by the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies celebrates the links between archaeology and nature. 

We will be teaming up with the Archives and Cornish Studies Service, Cornwall Council’s Historic Environment Team, and Cornwall National Landscape, exploring partnership working through the Manorial Maps Project. We will also explore opportunities for our internationally important mining heritage can contribute to nature recovery.

With a full programme of talks and activities, there’s something for everyone.

Volunteer Work Party

Venue: Kit Hill, near Callington

Heathland is a valuable update in the mining landscape but bracken can encroach on this habitat with an impact on the heritage and biodiversity of the site. Join Cormac Ranger Jenny Heskett for a morning of bracken scything and pulling on the west side of the Kit Hill. 

Tools will be supplied, please wear old clothes and strong boots.
