Levant Mine and Beam Engine
Levant Mine is an example of the iconic clifftop mines that can be found along the north coast of Cornwall. Levant is known for its working beam engine and for a mining disaster in 1919. You have to pre-book a tour with the National Trust to visit the mine itself, but you can also explore lots of historic mine buildings around the site as well as in the surrounding mining landscape.
The coast paths from Levant are undulating with steep sections. The paths are varied but typically have uneven surfaces, loose material and are narrow in places. A couple of hundred metres from the car park heading east along the coast path brings you to a barren post-mining landscape awash with reds, yellows and oranges that are particularly vivid after rain. The expansive of mine buildings of Geevor Tin Mine can be seen inland.
As you leave Levant, on the eastern side of the road (left) you can see the low stone walls that mark out historic mineworkers' smallholding plots.
Levant facilities, transport and parking:
There is a National Trust car park at Levant for people who need to park nearby. The main parking for other people is at Geevor Tin Mine.
